Dreamer.

When you think of dreamers do you think of people who don’t live in reality? Do you think of Joseph1 in the bible, having dreams, interpreting dreams, and being sold into slavery because of a dream?

I wonder how many of us are dreamers, but no one knows because we don’t want to have to either chase the dreams we have and risk failing in front of those we told. Or, maybe we are afraid that the dreams are too big, maybe they aren’t real, maybe if we tell others the dreams we risk getting placed in the “you live in a fantasy world” category.

This is a call to action for dreamers. We need to share our dreams. We need to chase our dreams. We need to let others see us chasing our dreams and risking the fall of a failure. I read a sticker this week that said, “your comfort zone will kill you.” I thought to myself, “is that true?” Yes, maybe so. To not have a dream to chase, to not be living for something bigger than yourself, where’s the motivation to even get up? I can quit on me, pretty easy. How about you? Isn’t it easier to do less in an empty gym than it is in a group class where everyone will see you choosing to quit? I think we need the accountability of the people watching us to keep us motivated to not let them down. We need people to know our dreams, and know those people are watching us and expecting us to make choices that reflect what we are living for. We need to be the dreamers we were made to be. I believe we would be happier individuals if we were living and working towards something bigger than ourselves.

I have shared many of my dreams with those closest to me. I still have a dream that I have not yet seen come to reality. Instead of thinking, they must think I’m crazy, or I was wrong. On days I would like to quit making choices that reflect what I’m working towards. I think, what does that say about my belief in the dream and the One who gave me that dream? If I hadn’t shared the dream, I wouldn’t have that accountability. I would be able to quit. I believe if I quit working towards the dream, I would die. Maybe not literally. But the life in my life, the color in my days, and the joy in believing in what may be possible all die. They die when I choose comfort zone over dreaming. On days when life feels like too much I think “how could there ever be more? I’m barely doing today!” But, at the same time I think that must mean, that God is going to provide, and that I won’t always feel so overwhelmed. So while I question Him, I also feel hope grow inside me that even in this hard moment, there is more goodness ahead. I haven’t peaked, life isn’t coming to a close, I’m not done, and God is still choosing to use me. My unfulfilled dream keeps me moving forward with hope.

I will say, that yes, like Joseph your family and friends can and probably will question you and your dreams. But guess what, God speaks to each of us individually, and if you heard from God then there is no amount of outside questioning or pressure will change what God will bring to pass if you keep following Him faithfully. If someone else’s “that can’t happen” fires you up, or irritates you, that’s probably a good sign that this is a real dream that you need to chase. Prove them wrong. Do what you were made to do. Chasing dreams is where the real adventure lives.

Also, cheer others on when you see them chasing and achieving their dreams. I know it’s easy to choose envy, but don’t. We are all on our own path, with our own timetables, and the one that gives us dreams also prepares and equips us to walk those dreams out. Sometimes Lots of times the preparation part is long and tedious, but trust Him. He gave you the dream on the front end, just like with Joseph, so that you would know He is taking you somewhere great. Be faithful. He will be with you in every moment. Your dreams from Him will come true. They may not come true as fast as you want, in the way that you want, but your God is too good and faithful to ever fail. Trust Him, and chase those dreams!

Let me know your dreams and I’ll cheer you on! Just this week I saw someone’s dream come true that is very comparable to my unrealized dream. I congratulated them, and took it as a confirmation that my dream is still on it’s way to being experienced. No jealousy and all excitement. I know the road to realized dreams is rocky and nothing to envy. I’m happy someone else walked the rocky path bravely. I’m inspired by their courage and perseverance. I see their realized dream as a reminder that God make good on His promises. And after walking faithfully (sometimes for a very long time), we do in fact experience the promise and say “Amen.2

Benefits to sharing the dreams?

  • you will have people to hold you accountable on days you would like to quit chasing the dream
  • you will have people cheering you on (ideally)
  • you will have people questioning you; which will make you evaluate what you really believe, and how passionate you are to chase the dream
  • you will inspire other dreamers when you chase your dreams (even when you fail! It will show them failure isn’t deadly…Failure can be a lesson to be learned from. Then you can be off to chase the next dream with new wisdom and clarity.)
