Is there an antidote to fear?

I’ve been prone to be overcome by fear for as long as I can remember. When I was a little girl up until even a teen, if I needed to be left for any amount of time I was anxious. Extremely anxious. I always imagined my parents were dead, and I was in charge of all my little siblings and there was no one coming to help or save me. I also had terrible nightmares, in some a parent would die. I would wake up terrified at and sneak to the door of my parent’s room just to see if I could hear my dad breathing so I would know it was safe to go back to sleep. I was doing are they alive checks all the time! My that was quite stressful.

I remember quoting as a child “God didn’t give me a spirit of fear.” But boy did I have a spirit of fear.

I’ve lived many years now. I have seen none of the fears I had ever come true. If a version did come true it was never as bad as I imagined, and God has always made all hard things good in due time. I’ve learned to trust God and not just remind myself of, “This fear isn’t from God. But also, “Hey Courtney, every time you have been scared before it’s been time wasted.” In fact getting scared or anxious now is a sign to me I’m headed the right way. It’s kind of a feeling I begin to look forward to because it means big things are on the horizon, and the fear is the devil trying to keep me from what God has in store.

Nowadays, the fear still tries to come and overwhelm me, stop me in my tracks, or keep me from any forward progress. But now I repeat in my head, to myself, “Trust Him. Trust Him. Trust Him.” Then I may switch to an out loud “I trust you God. I trust you with this situation. I trust you with what I don’t understand. I am excited to see what you’re going to do here. Thank you for letting me witness you at work.”

Action Steps:

  1. Remind yourself of God’s faithfulness and re-anchor your heart in Him. Has God done big things for you before? Why couldn’t He do it again? If you haven’t seen Him at work in your life, what about those around you? I promise you, no one is more precious to God than you are. Some have just given Him their life as a canvas for which God has been given the liberty to make himself known and shown.
  2. Give God space to work. If everything in your life can be worked out by you, then you haven’t left any room for God. How will you learn to trust Him, if you never give Him a chance to prove you right or wrong in His abilty to do mighty things in your life?

God has never failed me. Not once. He won’t start failing you or I now, either. He may allow you or I to face bigger/scarier things, but we are the only ones limited in power and abilty. Nothing is too big or too scary for God. Nothing.

I will not limit God’s work in my life by being scared. He is always going to do what He has planned to do, but I won’t be there to see it if I let fear stop me. How about you?

Look back. Have you been scared before? What happened? Was God there? If you are reading this, then it didn’t take you out did it? Do you find God trust worthy? Why? Why not?

I’ve found God very trust worthy. That’s why I will say yes to things that scare me every day. I will fight to be on the front lines to see God work, and that does require me to face and feel fear, but choose to keep moving forward.

What’s stopping you?

What would you do if you weren’t scared?

What’s the biggest dream you have? Are you chasing it? Do you trust that God could really bring it to fruition? Why or why not?

If you place all your trust in Him, and quit saying I can’t do x, y, and z because of x, y or z. Your life could become really exciting, really wild, and really fun.

God places our desires within us. Why would He do that and then not make good on them. The adventure to be found in life is always in the space where we choose to give God free reign. I encourage you let Him working in you, around you, and through you. The outcome is not up to you. The outcome in you dream, or situation is up to an all mighty, all knowing, and very loving God. So I ask you. Do you trust Him to chase your dreams, to fight to be on the front lines where are miracles taking place?

If you still feel scared that’s normal. You have to take steps in faith, not knowing the result of that choice, and trust the one who leads you. The more you walk with God, the more you witness Him show up, then the braver you will choose to be. You might still feel a little fear, but you will learn that fear is only a sign to fight forward because the best is yet to come!

How will you learn God is trust worthy if you don’t say yes to things bigger and scary than you can handle in your own power?

I urge you to go after something you certainly aren’t capable of in your own power. Give God space to work. See what happens.
